Experience is not what happens to a man; it is what a man does with what happens to him.

The English writer Aldous Huxley had that brilliant thought and even though I would have used the feminine noun and pronoun, I cannot agree more. In over thirty-five years of clinical practice in Miami, Florida, I have been privileged to witness the depths and heights of every human emotion and concern as I have walked the path of life with my clients, their families, and friends.

Some of these situations could have occurred only in South Florida. I think I can safely say that few therapists have stepped in to help marine mammal animal trainers deal with disenfranchised grieving when their beloved dolphins were dying of a virus strain. I developed an in house psychoeducational and grieving project called “Legitimizing Losses.” This allowed the animal trainers to grieve privately while being challenged by the paradoxical reality of having to “carry on” with daily shows and audiences.

In the aftermath of devastating Hurricane Andrew, I volunteered and led counseling groups for the teachers and staff of several public junior highs and high schools. As our whole community was dealing with the overwhelming reality of multiple losses, a certain level of post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) was in the air for many of us. Being available to the teachers and staff allowed them to be more present for their students and parents. We held each other’s hands through a transition time which lasted far longer than the physical destruction it caused. And we all grew and were not alone.

However, no matter a situation’s particular circumstance, my long experience as a person, parent, daughter, sibling, friend, therapist, teacher, trainer... has honed my ability to listen at a very deep level, and use all of my heart and senses. In working with you, I draw upon my deep well of compassion, personal work, and training, to make a difference in your life.

Your invited to come into my space...you will find a quiet, comforting ambience, a welcoming and compassionate presence as well as a skillful and reliable professional- Dr. Nancy. I will hear and witness what you bring my way with truth and honesty. As well, I will work my best to offer practical and useful action choices and practice to take as tools with you on your way.
